The problem with evil
I do not think that good can exist without evil. If there was no evil in the world, then good would not shine through. I believe that out of everything bad that happens, something good is a result. Sometimes people will never realize why it had to happen and to other people, it is evident at the time that it happens. Bad things happen to good people all of the time unfortunately. I also believe that everything happens for a reason. If nothing bad ever happened, how would people learn and grow? I think evil is necessary in life for good to prevail.
The Debate over Free will
There are many questions concerning free will. Does it exist? What is free will? These are both very good questions that have many answers. Some people think that free will does not exist. They think that everyone is born with a plan and that they are just pawns in life that is being moved around by a higher power. Other people think that people are given free will to live their life the way that we feel is right for us. Every decision we make has a consequence. It is either a positive or negative consequence. I think free will is a wonderful thing. It is nice to know that I am in charge of my life. I can do what I feel is right for me and no one else and I like that.

I believe that good could exist just fine without evil. Just as dark is simply the absence of light, evil is simply the absence of good. When you compare the two, the contrast is greater. However, I do not believe that good needs to be compared to anything to “shine though” as an example.
You go from “evil” to “bad”. These are two separate things. Bad things are like accidents or natural disasters. Both are “bad” when they happen to you but neither is “evil”. They did not seek you out to cause harm. They simply happen. When people speak of evil they are usually, referring to someone or something that actively seeks out innocent victims to prey on.
Good things do not “always” come out of “bad” or “evil” things that happen. Sometimes the evil or bad is so overwhelming that the people, person or place just does not have the capacity to rebound. However, how a person or people react to bad things does reveal a great deal about them.
You are right that people grow and learn from bad things that happen. Like the old saying “good judgment comes with experience and experience comes with bad judgments”. That is just part of growing up.
So, I do not believe “evil” is necessary. It just is. It exists in the world. As long as good, bad and evil exist, we will always wonder why. It is how you view and handle these that make you what you are.

Good job, your post generated a really great response! I like how you included related philosophical questions in your posts about the two chapters. You don't say much about what the book has to say about these though...did the chapters shed any light on these topics for you?
